Today the Glencadam brand is highly acclaimed and award- winning. The expressions coming out of this Scottish distillery have been reinforced by the addition of three new variants in 2016 — the 17 Year Old Triple Cask Portwood Finish, the 19 Year Old Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish and the Glencadam 25 Year Old. Now, Glencadam Distillery proudly announces the release of a rare 13Year Old expression.
Rare because in the autumn of 2000, Glencadam Distillery fell silent. This silence then became a deep sleep of three years until it had a enervating reawakening in the autumn of 2003, when it was reopened by Angus Dundee Distillers.
Now this rare 13 Year Old Limited Edition from the time when the distillation restarted truly represents and commemorates “The Re- Awakening” of Glencadam Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
The limited edition release has been bottled at 46% Vol and packaged in a shimmering gold, complimenting the look and feel of the Glencadam portfolio. Like all the other editions in the age statement range, the 13 Year Old, too, has not been chill-filtered and neither has been any colouring added. Each of the 6,000 bottles of this expression is individually numbered.
The Glencadam distillery is the last remaining one in the county of Angus, an area of the eastern Highland regions of Scotland. It is located about half a mile outside the ancient city, and former Royal Burgh, of Brechin. This pretty and immaculately maintained “boutique” distillery was established in 1825, just a year after legitimate large-scale distilling was legalised. The distillery has seen a series of owners — from the very first
‘Mister Cooper’ who sold the distillery in 1827 to Hiram Walker in 1950s and the Allied Domeq which closed the distillery in 2003.
The distillery withstood the ravaging of both world wars — its warehouses were used as barracks for soldiers. But it was never shut down until 200. Since
2003, the distillery has been owned by Angus Dundee Distillers Plc, who bought it in June that year and opened the distillery for immediate production.
The distillery released its first ever single malt, Glencadam Single Malt Scotch Whisky 15 Year Old, in
December 2005.
Since then, the distillery has been periodically releasing its rare editions. Each of these ccasks are aged between 25 and 35 years old. Any one cask typically produce anywhere between 250 to 600 bottles and each label is individually numbered, and the cask number and the date of distillation and bottling is recorded. Glencadam Single Cask Aged 30 Years has been bottled from cask number 730. Only 234 bottles exist.
Duncan Baldwin, regional director and brand development director at Angus Dundee Distillers said: “We are fortunate enough to be able to produce excellent malt at Glencadam. We are also blessed by being able to retain age statements on the vast majority of our releases. ‘The Re- Awakening’ 13 Year Old Edition is characterised by its rich flavours of ripe fruit accompanied by smooth vanilla sweetness, resulting in a taste that meets the most discerning of whisky lovers’ preferences.”
The new 13 Year Old Glencadam is available from May 2017 and will sell in mainstream western European markets, Asia and the US. It is envisaged that the product will retail in the region of £49 a bottle in the UK, €59 in Europe and $65 in the United States. Apart from the limited edition, the company has also introduced Tomintoul 21 YO Single Malt to the consumers, which was bottled in February. According to Sanjiv Puri, regional director (Indian Sub-Continent) at Angus Dundee India Pvt. Ltd., the company is now keen to make these available in Indian markets, too.
